| Inside Straight - A Review In Midstream |

I'm still in the process of reading Inside Straight, the new-ish "Wild Cards" novel. There's a lot to like in it. But parts of it don't sit well with me and it took a while for me to put my finger on it. Namely, it's the fact that much of the story so far revolves around "American Hero," a reality TV show where teams of Aces live together, face contrived challenges, and vote people off each week.
I hate such shows. Despise them, frankly. They hit a number of hot buttons for me, namely feelings of never being good enough to hang with the cool kids.
I'm going to stick with the book, because it's going in interesting places now that a number of characters are in Egypt, but I'm not going to feel less dirty about it. |

I liked it better than the Card Sharks/Rox books and Aces Abroad and the Democratic National Convention book, and not as much as the first triad.
P.S. -- it does get better.
Yeah, it did, for the most part. I finished it last night and it turned out alright. I had some problems with the ending (the UN portion of it), because it just felt too "pat" and only happened because of author fiat.
SPOILER WARNING (NOT YOU, CHRIS)
DON'T READ UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE SPOILED
I MEAN IT
The UN Secretary General wants a team of Aces because the UN is basically a toothless institution, so he makes it happen. The problem is, nothing works that way at the UN. They exist at the sufferance of the rest of the world, particularly the permanent members of the Security Council. And I guaran-damn-tee you the Security Council would veto the hell out of any attempt to give the UN "teeth" that it could exercise without their sayso. Especially if said teeth were almost entirely US Citizens (Lohengrin seems the sole exception).
In short, it snapped my reality suspenders really hard. Which is too bad, because I liked the build up, just not the resolution.
I thought it was totally the Four Aces, all over again. And yeah, the Security Council would certainly veto it.
The very cool thing is, it has me thinking about gaming in the Wild Cards universe again. And I do want to see the next book; in fact it's got me pumped about the series in a way I haven't been in years.
Since I seem to be working on a Gestalt Earth campaign, it's definitely got the ideas flowing. | |
