| Austinites, Point Me To The Good Stuff! |

This coming weekend, Jane and I are driving up for a long weekend to celebrate our anniversary. As is typical for us, we've got a few nebulous plans and objectives, and a good deal of time to fill.
The main plan is to stay near 6th Street and go listen to music in the evenings. This is Jane's part of the plan and I am happy with it. I've never done the 6th St thing in all my years of hanging around Austin and while I know it's not the same scene it was, there's still things to do. Or so I'm told. The hotel is already booked, and it sounds nice.
I know we'll hit the usual shopping spots (Book People, Dragon's Lair, Whole Foods, Waterloo, and Toy Joy).
I've got a couple of food destinations on tap (Mother's, the Clay Pit, Curra's, Chuey's, Kerbey Lane).
We've got dinner plans lined up with one old friend, but if any of the other Austin area folks reading this wants to grab a bite, let me know.
But I know there's got to be other stuff to do that we've never bothered with. Like the French Legation Museum, and watching the bats fly, but other than that, I'm not sure what else we we're going to do to fill the time.
So feel free to suggest away. We're driving up Friday morning and heading back after lunch on Sunday. If it's a food suggestion, remember they need to have vegetarian options beyond the dinner salad. If it's an outdoor activity, remember that it's July and Austin is freakin' hot. |

I've heard that you can usually see the bats on Congress Ave. That's also where one of the drum circles is at the full moons, which unfortunately already passed by or I'd suggest that. Um. When I went to my old friend siodhe's birthday in Feb, one of his friends had Slacker maps of Austin. I'll try to find mine and post some bits noted from that. :)
There are Improv Comedy shows Friday and Saturday Night at Coldtowne Theatre and the Hideout, if you're interested in that.
It is my observation that I am now too old for the 6th street scene -- not the music, but the staggering fratboys. I am much comfier with the emerging 4th street scene, which tends more to blues and jazz and aims at a demographic perhaps ten years older. It's also pricier. All the restaurants you list are loved by me, but I cannot go to Austin without going to the Salt Lick. Of course, I'm mostly carnivorous. Honestly, what I like the best is just walking around the lake. I also do dig the Wildflower Center, but at this time of year it might disappoint. Meanwhile, support my favorite co-op: http://wheatsville.coop/
the Umlauf Sculpture Gardens are pretty cool. They're over by Zilker and while outside, are very shady.
And as long as you're near Zilker...Barton Springs Pool!!! Take it from me... a walk through the Sculpture Gardens, followed by a trip to Barton Springs, finished off with margaritas and tex-mex at the original Chuy's (just down from Zilker on Barton Springs Road)... that's a little taste of why God made Texas.
Most of the things I would suggest are already listed in your post or in the replies! That sculpture garden does have some interesting stuff (it is outside, but I seem to remember a good bit of shade). I was also going to recommend Barton Springs. My sister says that's probably about the only place you'll find to swim right now since it's been so dry. But it's a spring-fed pool, so it will be NICE and cold on a hot day. My sister also volunteers at the South Austin Museum of Popular Culture: http://www.samopc.org/info.htmI haven't ever been there myself, because they're always between exhibits when I visit. They have an exhibit now, info at that web page, not sure if it's something you might find interesting. My sister Carolyn works at the Planet K next door. Hope y'all have a good weekend, and congratulations on your 15 year anniversary! | |
