Cheap Counters - Further Refinements [Jul. 21st, 2008|08:29 pm]

Because I'm one of those lazy bums who's always trying to come up with a way to make something easier/more efficient.

Today, since I was in the city, I went shopping for more of the 1" disks I'm using to make counters.  Unfortunately, Hobby Lobby was out, and Michael's only had a rather overpriced seven for $1.50, and only one package of those.

However, Michael's did have something else:  Lara's Crafts' Alphabet Circles.  One inch wooden disks with a letter of the alphabet painted/printed on one side.  Best of all, a bag of 52 is only $1.99.  The best part, however is that the unpainted side has a heavy-duty adhesive backing.  Which means I only have to stick the cardstock on the disks, then seal them with the decoupage.  One could also paint the backs of the disks if one is opposed to the alphabet on aesthetic grounds.  I haven't decided if I'm going to do that or not.

I use those 4"x6" sheets of magnetic backing with a sticky front. Then I can just print out my counters on a plain sheet of paper and stick it to the magnetic sheet, and cut them out. The magnet just gives the counter weight while still being bendable (so it doesn't crease or rip). I print my counters at 3/4" so they don't conflict on the battlemat, so I get about 40 counters out of each $2 sheet.

I love these posts. I love how 4E seems to be making everyone into clever craftspeople.

My current solution is a one inch craft punch like you use, paired with craft foam (non-slide, soft, bendable) and stuck together with little two-sided sticky dot things.

Your alphabet marks could serve to differentiate otherwise identical monsters...

Yeah, Jane noted that I could use the letters that way.

Of course, the funny thing is, while a discussion of 4E was the starting point, I'm actually using this for Champions. Which means I should probably try to actually run some Champions rather than just crafting stuff for it.

I found myself in Michael's yesterday and ran across the same overpriced disks. I was looking for a cheap, plentiful substitute to poker chips for Unisystem's Drama Points.
