The Afternoon After The Night Before

Thanks for all the kind words and thoughts, everyone.  It's humbling to have so many wonderful people care about me and my family.

Right now, things are going quite well.  Not "as well as can be expected," but genuinely well and satisfactory.  A lot of this has to do with Mom's ability to weather a crisis and Dad's medical history, which probably deserves a word or two.

This morning, we got up and drove to the mortuary and took care of arrangements for his cremation.  The folks there were extremely pleasant and professional to deal with.  Not only was there no low-pressure sales pitch, there was none at all.  They asked mom what she wanted, she told them, and they walked her through the process.  It took about half an hour to take care of things and I really can't express how much of a relief it was.

It never occurred to me that some day I might one day find myself writing his obituary.  I think it turned out OK, but Mom will need to OK it.

Tonight, I'm going to try to have dinner with a couple of local friend and might try and track down a rum and Coke somewhere in his honor (the first drink he ever bought for me, when I was twelve, in a restaurant bar in Matamoros).  I'm going to head home tomorrow.  In a couple of weeks, we'll drive back for the memorial, once we get it scheduled.
