(no subject)

Today we got up and met burgundy for brunch at Magnolia Cafe.  Serious flashback time for me, when I realized I once ate there with lori_holder and her mom about 20 years ago.  Jane and N had never met before, but they got on quite well.

(N, Jane is b3zsgirl, should you wish to monitor her adventures.)

After that, we drove up to Dragon's Lair for my annual pilgrimage to a gaming store that doesn't suck.  I spent a bit more than I'd normally like on several Hero Games products I'd never seen in Houston (I thought one was PDF-only, and was utterly unaware of another's existence).  This was followed by an intended trip to the South Austin Museum of Cultural History that ended up a visit to the adjoining Planet K, because the museum was apparently closed.

One bad note, Jane seems to have lost her college class ring and got rather (rightly) upset about it.

We then went to the Whole Foods of the Gods to pick up some lunch stuff (our motel has a kitchen), and rested/read for a few hours.

This evening, we had dinner at the Clay Pit, then watched the bats come out from under the South Congress bridge.  For those of you not from Texas, this is an awesome seasonal occurrence as a colony of Mexican Free-tailed Bats that numbers somewhere between 1 and 1.5 MILLION critters emerges from its lair under a bridge to feed.  It happens every summer and it's the first time I'd actually seen it.  In typical Austin fashion, people make a party out of it.  If you ever make it to the capital of Texas during the season, you really should make time to see it.

After that, we drove back over to the motel and walked two blocks to a fairly sedate bar (we're staying on the quieter end of 6th St, because we're old).  We had a couple of beers and watched people for a while, and now we're calling it a night.

All in all, it's been a most excellent trip.  It took me about a day to realize how relaxed I am.  For the past few years, I habitually ball up my fists from stress and this afternoon I noticed I'm not only not doing it, I can't easily make myself do it.  I'm sure this will pass, but it does show what a tonic for the nerves Austin can be.
